Gala 2017 Highlights
On Tuesday, May 2, 2017 Figure Skating in Harlem celebrated 20 years of its one-of-a-kind education, health, and leadership program for girls of color at the Champions in Life Benefit Gala, held at 583 Park Avenue, NYC. The gala fundraiser brought in nearly 1 million dollars.
The organization honored Olympic medalist Sasha Cohenand philanthropist Curtis McGraw Webster, and presented a special Power of Inspiration Award to figure skating icon and humanitarian Scott Hamilton.
On hand to celebrate FSH’s 20th Anniversary were figure skating stars of the past, present, and future including Olympic Champions Meryl Davis, Evan Lysacek, Scott Hamilton, and Dick Button; Olympic medalists Sasha Cohen and JoJo Starbuck, as well as 2018 Olympic hopefuls and three-time world medalists Maia and Alex Shibutani, three-time National Champion Ashley Wagner, 2017 National ChampionNathan Chen, and 2016 National Champion Adam Rippon.
Event co-chair and fashion designer Vera Wang said “Figure Skating in Harlem is a quintessential New York organization that’s about achievement, excellence and community.” Wang enjoyed the evening’s presentations and celebrations with fellow fashion designers B Michael and Louise Camuto, business moguls Terry Lundgren and Jeff Tweedy, media personalities s Andrea Joyce and Rhonda Ross, and philanthropists Susan Fales-Hill, Agnes Gund, and Ellen Lowey.
Actor/producer/director Tamara Tunie served as emcee for the evening, and Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg was the honorary chair.
