Background/Mission:

Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is the first organization in the world to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating, to give girls 6-18 access to innovative programs that advance their intellectual, emotional and physical health. Our mission is to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership and academic achievement. Now in our 22nd year, our award-winning programs have provided low-income girls with access to education, health and wellness services to help them reach their fullest potential. Our vision is for every student, regardless of socioeconomic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams. She will be a powerful speaker, an effective leader, live a healthy lifestyle and be a global citizen. Headquartered in Harlem, in 2017 we launched our first satellite chapter – Figure Skating in Detroit.

Job Description: 

The Development Associate has a central focus on supporting the daily operations of the Development Department as well as the long-term fundraising strategy to increase giving and cultivate individual, foundation, and corporate relationships. This position plays a critical role in the execution of events, fundraising appeals and the engagement of our Young Professionals Board, and also has responsibility for supporting the organization’s finance function. The position provides exciting growth opportunities in all aspects of development with a thriving national nonprofit organization.

Responsibilities:

Support implementation of a development plan that will generate short-term results and sustainable long-term growth

Maintain donor and gift records in the fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge)

Deposit, process, and receipt all gifts received, generate gift acknowledgment letters, and pull data files for various appeals, mailings, and invitations

Enter organizational expenses and program income into the accounting software (QuickBooks)

Manage Development calendar and the production of all Development mailings (the Annual Report, Champions for FSH, End of Year Appeal, Annual Gala, and Spring Appeal), working with outside vendors and consultants

Serve as staff point person to the Young Professionals Board

Provide lead support in planning and implementation of all fundraising events throughout the year, including Young Professionals events, community events, and the Annual Gala

Create fundraising progress reports for internal tracking purposes and for Board meetings

Support the creation of communication materials that highlight FSH’s impact, including online newsletters to donors and the Annual Report

Stay current with FSH’s programs and strategies along with trends in the fundraising industry

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required

At least 1-3 years of fundraising experience required

Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge or a similar fundraising/relational database

Proficiency with QuickBooks a plus

Appreciation for youth development and a passion for the mission of FSH

Outstanding written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others, including staff and Board members

Manage multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously, while working in a fast-paced environment

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with an attention for detail

Knowledge of the New York philanthropic community a plus

Presence and comfort level to work with a diverse population

Flexibility to work periodic evenings and occasional weekends as needed

Compensation:

Salary is competitive. Benefits for full-time employment include fully paid health insurance, three weeks paid vacation to start, retirement savings program and life and long term disability insurance.
