Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Dennis

FSH Staff: How many years have you been teaching at Figure Skating in Harlem?
Ms. Dennis: I have been a teacher at Figure Skating in Harlem for seven years, starting in 2011.

FSH Staff: What do you teach?
Ms. Dennis: I teach Financial Literacy to 1st – 5th graders. And tutor students in Math, ELA and Social Studies.

FSH Staff: Why is this work important?
Ms. Dennis: This work is important to me because Financial Literacy is not addressed in the public school curriculum, and I believe we must teach girls, especially minority girls, the urgency of saving money, which will eventually lead to their financial freedom.

FSH Staff: Why do you teach at Figure Skating in Harlem?
Ms. Dennis: FSH is a vital organization in the Harlem community because it offers needs and services that girls in this neighborhood would not otherwise have access to. For example, financial literacy classes, homework assistance, tutoring, college and high school preparation and spoken word classes teach the girls determination, confidence and how to recognize the power in their own voices. Plus, all of the staff are dedicated and work really hard to prepare these young girls to be successful in life, and it feels good to be a part of that family.

Ms. Dennis’ hobbies are: Cooking, reading, and traveling.
